Project 120 Classrooms: Turnover and Inauguration at Dulag, Leyte

Children's Hour Philippines Foundation, with the support of Sun Life Foundation donated 5 classrooms among the 2 public schools in Dulag, Leyte.

After 5 years, since Typhoon Yolanda happened, our student beneficiaries in Dulag, Leyte will now enjoy studying and learning in the comforts of their new classrooms which was successfully inaugurated and turned over last June 8, 2018.

Children's Hour Philippines Foundation, with the support of Sun Life Foundation donated 5 classrooms among the 2 public schools in Dulag, Leyte. The beneficiaries were Rizal Elementary School, receiving 3 Classrooms; and Francisco Dumaguit Memorial Elementary School with 2 Classrooms.

During the Turn-Over Ceremony, CH Chairperson, Ms. Emily Abrera, expressed her sincere wishes for the students of the schools: “Sa ating kabataan, sana sa loob ng mga silid-aralan na ito ay matutuhan ninyo ang pagmamahal sa kaalaman, pagmamahal sa isa't isa, sa kalikasan, at sa ating bayan.”

Sun Life Chairperson, Ms.Riza Mantaring, expressed how proud she was of the work we have achieved together through Project 120 Classrooms: “This is something we believe will last for generations and can really make a difference in the lives of Filipinos”.

SPG President, Angelou, who is currently a Grade 6 pupil in Rizal Elementary School shared with us the daily hardships she and her fellow students had to endure after Typhoon Yolanda ravaged their school and how the support from both Children’s Hour and Sun Life has greatly helped them: “We are proud and excited to have well-ventilated classrooms, with eye-level blackboards, and 3 beautifully tiled toilets which we did not experience before our stint in our makeshift classrooms”.

The classrooms were donated as part of the Project 120, a partnership between Children’s Hour and Sun Life Foundation which aims to build 120 classrooms for public schools that are impoverished or victims of natural disasters. These schools were chosen as beneficiaries for this project because they were currently in need of more educational infrastructure after their classrooms were badly damaged during the Typhoon Yolanda of 2013. These classrooms will benefit a total of 250 public school students this school year.

To date, Children’s Hour Philippines has turned over a total of 82 classrooms and 10 more classrooms will be turned over in Jamindan, Capiz later this year. Sun Life Volunteers also had a mural painting activity and financial literacy workshop during the event.
