Celebrating National Literacy Month with GOLDEN ABC

MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines, 7 September 2019 — Volunteers from GOLDEN ABC, Inc. (GABC) celebrated National Literacy Month during its 3rd Get Up for Kids! friends-raising activity with Children’s Hour and the children of Alay Pag-asa Christian Foundation, Inc. (Alay Pag-asa) in Mandaluyong City .

National Literacy Month is celebrated in the Philippines to promote the role of education in eradicating illiteracy. With increased literacy, children are able to understand and learn better, thus achieving more in life.

A total of 46 volunteers from GABC spent their Saturday morning engaging with the child-beneficiaries of Alay Pag-asa in interactive learning activities. The participants started off with an ice breaker where their listening and reaction skills were tested.

GOLDEN ABC, Children’s Hour, and Alay Pag-asa celebrate National Literacy Month through a series of learning activities.

The volunteers and the kids then worked together in a game to form the most number of words they could from a set of letters. This activity enhanced their thinking skills and vocabulary as they discovered new words. The last game consisted of a combination of a relay and spelling bee activity. Participants raced through the course and had to spell out challenging words to earn points.

GABC volunteers guided the children through the activities and taught them new knowledge. The activities strengthened the children’s literacy and inspired them to continue learning.

Nutritious meals were served to the children as part of GABC’s partnership with Children’s Hour’s KAON Project (Kids Attaining Optimum Nutrition). The meals consisted of healthy and nutritious food that will help the children develop and focus on their education. GABC volunteers helped in distributing the food which the school community prepared.

“One year of enriching and nourishing the kids. Malayo po ang narating ng donations and commitments that you have given them. [The donations and commitments that you have given them went a long way.]” said GABC Corporate Affairs Senior Manager Ms. Layle Ancheta about their employees’ contribution to the foundations’ One Hour Campaign. “I hope you make this a special time with yourself and with the children.”

Volunteers engage the children of Alay Pag-asa in activities that strengthen their minds and bodies.

Na-energize kami as employees. Alam naman natin na yung Monday to Friday natin, mahirap yung ginagawa natin. Kapag Saturday, akala namin mahihirapan kami ulit, kasi gigising kami nang maaga. Pero mas nag-enjoy po kami sa games. [We were energized as employees. We know that our Monday to Friday is hard. Then come Saturday, we thought we would also have a hard time since we had to wake up early. But we enjoyed the games more.]” shared GABC volunteer Nordan. “Nag-give siya ng more energy for us to fuel us [come] Monday. [It gave us more energy to fuel us come Monday.]”

GABC’s "Get Up for Kids!" series of friends-raising activities with Children’s Hour will run until January 2019. GABC has been a Children’s Hour Champion since 2004, mobilizing their employees and business partners under its CSR platform called GET UP. Since then, the company was able to contribute in the Foundation’s mission through their annual employee and corporate donations, classroom-building initiatives, and friends-raising activities, among others.

Children’s Hour envisions a nation where Filipino children have access to their basic rights, such as the right to proper nutrition and good education, which will allow them to enjoy a happy, safe, and fulfilling future. This is achieved with the help of the foundation’s One Hour Campaign, where they invite individuals and companies to donate at least an hour’s worth of their annual salary. With your continuous support, Children’s Hour can help more children nationwide to achieve their dreams.
