MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines, 5 October 2019 — Volunteers from GOLDEN ABC, Inc. (GABC) held United Nations Month themed activities during its 4th Get Up for Kids! friends-raising activity with Children’s Hour and the children of Alay Pag-asa Christian Foundation, Inc. (Alay Pag-asa) in Mandaluyong City.
United Nations month is celebrated every October. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently, there are 193 member states who work together to achieve the organization's goals to keep world peace, foster cooperation between member states, and improve living conditions for people all over the world. The Philippines was among the 51 founding member states of the United Nations.
45 volunteers from GABC interacted with the child-beneficiaries of Alay Pag-asa through a series of engaging and informative activities. The volunteers and children participated in an ice breaker activity where they learned how to say “hello” in different languages. The teachers of Alay Pag-asa also guided them through a warm up dance to energize them for the day’s activities.
The volunteers and children grouped together representing different United Nations member states. They were tasked to recreate the assigned member state’s flag and learn about them such as their capital, currency, famous landmarks, and famous food. A short and exciting quiz bee tested what the children had learned from the guidance of the GABC volunteers.
In line with Global Handwashing Month, which is also celebrated in October, GABC donated hand soaps to Alay Pag-asa. The children were taught of the importance of handwashing before meals to remain healthy and avoid getting sick. Washing hands is the one of the cheapest interventions that can be done to save lives.
Nutritious meals were served to the children as part of GABC’s partnership with Children’s Hour’s KAON Project (Kids Attaining Optimum Nutrition). The meals consisted of healthy and nutritious food that will help the children develop and focus on their education. GABC volunteers demonstrated teamwork in helping to distribute the food.
“Matagal na pong partner ng Children's Hour ang GOLDEN ABC. Sobrang daming projects na po ang naitulong ng GOLDEN ABC. Mula po nung 1999, nung kami po ay nabuo, 1.4 million children na po ang natulungan natin, [GOLDEN ABC has been a partner of Children’s Hour for so long. GOLDEN ABC has helped us through so many projects,]” shared Children’s Hour Assistant Executive Director Ovy Javier. “So kasama ang GOLDEN ABC, kasama kayo [sa mga tumulong sa kabataan]. [Sa isang] oras lang na binigay niyo sa'min, napakadaming bata na po ang natulungan ninyo. [GOLDEN ABC has helped us help children. You have helped us help children. With just the one hour that you gave, you have already helped so many children.]”
The teachers of Alay Pag-asa were also recognized in celebration of Teachers’ Month. The teachers of Alay Pag-asa have continuously been a part of the Get Up for Kids! friends raising activities, helping organize the activities and feeding program in their foundation.
GABC’s "Get Up for Kids!" series of friends-raising activities with Children’s Hour will run until January 2019. GABC has been a Children’s Hour Champion since 2004, mobilizing their employees and business partners under its CSR platform called GET UP. Since then, the company was able to contribute in the Foundation’s mission through their annual employee and corporate donations, classroom-building initiatives, and friends-raising activities, among others.
Children’s Hour envisions a nation where Filipino children have access to their basic rights, such as the right to proper nutrition and good education, which will allow them to enjoy a happy, safe, and fulfilling future. This is achieved with the help of the foundation’s One Hour Campaign, where they invite individuals and companies to donate at least an hour’s worth of their annual salary. With your continuous support, Children’s Hour can help more children nationwide to achieve their dreams.
