Children’s Hour conducts successful workshop for CommUnity through Literacy

Reading skills provide children with access to information and empower them to learn almost anything. It is a basic skill that will prepare children for lifelong learning. CommUnity through Literacy (CTL) aims to be a reading proficiency program that will serve as the entry-point not only for academic excellence but also for community partnership. It actively engage major stakeholders such as Local Government Units (LGU), the Department of Education (DepEd), parents, teachers and community leaders to participate in enhancing the processes to improve the performance of children in reading,

In order to attain the main goal of improving children’s functional literacy, community stakeholders, undergo a process that includes: a) building capabilities of teachers to infuse new teaching strategies; b) capacity building of school officials and reinventing local school boards to revitalize the current practices and ensure that the school authorities are more than able to take on the responsibilities in the community, especially in resource mobilization and budgeting available funds; c) organizing parents summits into learning support systems; d) conducting community to give them guidance on how they can participate in the educational development of their children; e) developing workbooks and instructional materials; and, f) implementing continuous assessment of student performance and conducting enrichment programs.

For its fourth year of support, CH through the CTL serves a total of 3,822 elementary students in two project sites namely Alabel, Sarangani and Libon, Albay. In Alabel, Sarangani, CH supports the provision of distribution of Instructional Materials and Teachers’ Training. On other hand, at Libon, Albay the funding covers the holistic process wherein every child in the municipality benefits as they enter Grade 1 and their academic progress will be tracked until they finish the primary level, ensuring that no child will be left behind.
